La
Schola Cantorum de Venezuela derrochó
Pasión en las Islas Canarias
La
Schola Cantorum de Venezuela puede agregar
un éxito más a su larga lista
de reconocimientos. La agrupación
coral culminó triunfalmente la gira
que en la que recorrieron los auditorios
y teatros más célebres del
archipiélago canario dentro del marco
de la 25ta edición del célebre
e internacional Festival
de Música de Canarias. Como en
todas sus ediciones, este evento reunió
figuras y agrupaciones internacionales,
entre ellos nuestra Schola Cantorum de Venezuela
y la profesora María Guinand, así
como la Filarmónica de Viena, la
Orquesta de Filadelfia, el Coro del Teatro
Mariinsky de San Petersburgo, el Bach Collegium
Japan y la Orquesta Filarmónica de
Gran Canaria.
La
obra del argentino Osvaldo Golijov La Pasión
según San Marcos, que ya ha sido
presentado alrededor del orbe, fue estrenada
por primera vez en estas tierras ibéricas
durante el festival, en lo que fuera la
primera parte de la gira canaria. La interpretación
de la Pasión, bajo la batuta de María
Guinand, fue una de las más aplaudidas
del Festival, pues la original y compleja
puesta en escena y la calidad interpretativa
de los músicos maravilló a
los espectadores quienes ofrecieron una
ovación de pie durante más
de 15 minutos. La Schola Cantorum de Venezuela
y la Orquesta la Pasión se presentaron
en dos funciones el 5 y 7 de febrero en
el Auditorio Alfredo Kraus en Las Palmas
de Gran Canaria y en el Auditorio de Tenerife
en Santa Cruz de Tenerife respectivamente.
Artistas de la talla de Biella da Costa,
Gonzalo Grau, Aquiles Báez, Jessica
Rivera, Mikael Ringquist, Deraldo Ferreira
y Reynaldo González conformaron,
nuevamente con éxito, el elenco de
este montaje.
Importantes
catedráticos de la Universidad de
Las Palmas y de la Laguna, que asistieron
con muchísima expectativa, se mostraron
altamente satisfechos, con semejante derroche
musical de tanta expresividad y profesionalismo.
Como lenguaje universal que es la música,
decían, este despliegue de conocimiento
e innovación que posee la Schola
Cantorum de Venezuela y la Orquesta la Pasión,
es superior, en muchos sentidos, a lo ya
conocido en las ediciones pasadas de este
exigente festival de Música de Canarias.
Adicionalmente,
la Schola Cantorum de Venezuela fue designada
para clausurar el 25to Festival de Música
de Canarias en las islas no capitalinas.
A través de dos programas compuestos,
el primero por piezas sacras y rituales
como Jubiaba, Pater Noster y la Fiesta de
San Juan, y el segundo por canciones corales,
madrigales y danzas latinoamericanos compuestos
por Alberto Grau, Simón Díaz,
Beatriz Bilbao, Astor Piazzolla, entre otros
insignes compositores latinoamericanos,
la Schola llevó su excelencia y profesionalismo
musical a las islas de El Hierro, La Gomera,
La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura y La
Graciosa durante siete días que constituyeron
la segunda etapa de la gira por estas islas.
El público canario brindó
su aplauso cálido y su reconocimiento
a nuestra agrupación, dejando en
el ambiente el deseo de público e
intérpretes de un nuevo encuentro.

The
Schola Cantorum Pours Some Passion over
the Canary Islands
The
Schola Cantorum of Venezuela can add another
victory to their long list of achievements:
The choral ensemble finished triumphantly
a tour that took them to the most prestigious
auditoria and theaters of the Canary archipelago
within the framework of the 25th edition
of the internationally renowned Canary
Islands Music Festival. This event is
a meeting point for international choir
conductors and ensembles like the Vienna
Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra,
St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre Choir,
Bach Collegium Japan and the Great Canary
Philharmonic Orchestra. Our Schola Cantorum
of Venezuela and professor María
Guinand also participated at this Festival.
Osvaldo
Golijov’s La Pasión según
San Marcos, which has already been performed
all around the planet, was premiered in
the Iberian Peninsula during the first part
of the Festival. The interpretation of La
Pasión, under María Guinand’s
baton, was one of the most applauded of
the event, since its original and complex
mise-en-scène and the performance
quality of the musicians delighted the audience,
who gave a standing ovation for over fifteen
minutes. The Schola Cantorum of Venezuela
and La Pasión Orchestra offered two
concerts on February 5 and 7 at the Alfredo
Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
and at the Tenerife Auditorium in Santa
Cruz de Tenerife respectively. Outstanding
artists such as Biella da Costa, Gonzalo
Grau, Aquiles Báez, Jessica Rivera,
Mikael Ringquist, Deraldo Ferreira and Reynaldo
González make up rest of the line-up.
Important
professors of the Universidad de Las Palmas
and La Laguna, who attended with great expectations,
were very pleased with such musical display,
its expresiveness and professionalism. Since
music is a universal language, or so they
said, this display of knowledge and innovation
by the Schola Cantorum and La Pasión
Orchestra is far superior to what has been
presented in past editions of this demanding
Music Festival.
Addtionally,
the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela was appointed
to close the 25th Edition of the Canary
Island Music Festival on non-capital islands.
Through two programs -the first one included
sacred and ritualistic pieces like Jubiaba,
Pater Noster and La Fiesta de San Juan and
the second one comprised of Latin American
choral songs, madrigals and dances composed
by Alberto Grau, Simón Díaz,
Beatriz Bilbao, Astor Piazzolla, among other
renowned Latin American composers- the Schola
Cantorum brought their musical excellence
and professionalism to the islands of El
Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Lanzarote,
Fuerteventura y La Graciosa during the seven
days that lasted the second part of the
tour. The Canary audience gave a warm applause
to our ensemble, expressing the desire to

La
Cantoría Alberto Grau finaliza
gira a Texas y Oklahoma
Veinte años han transcurrido
desde que la Cantoría Alberto Grau
triunfara en el “XXXVII Concurso
Polifónico Internacional Guido
D´Arezzo “(Italia). A partir
de ese momento, la agrupación no
ha dejado de exportar la calidad del canto
coral venezolano en diferentes festivales
y concursos internacionales. Su participación
en la Convención Nacional de la
ACDA (Asociación Americana de Directores
Corales) 2009 a principios de marzo pasado
en Oklahoma City (EEUU) no fue la excepción.
La
agrupación coral femenina hizo
escala en Texas (Fort Worth, Denton, Copell),
antes de llegar a la ciudad de Oklahoma.
Se presentaron en varias iglesias de distintas
denominaciones, así como en universidades,
dando muestra de su profesionalismo y
excelencia vocal a través de un
repertorio sacro que incluyó Mariam
Matrem, Salve Regina, Laus Trium Puerorum,
entre otras canciones contemporáneas
de corte religioso. Así, las melodiosas
voces de la Cantoría ofrecieron
una verdadera experiencia espiritual a
los asistentes.
La
ACDA es una de las organizaciones de música
coral más importantes del mundo
que en esta edición celebró
su aniversario número 50. Su presidente
y director de este evento, Jerry McCoy
señala que la Cantoría Alberto
Grau “canta increíblemente
hermoso. El público se había
puesto de pie en un segundo después
de que concluyó el concierto porque
estas mujeres cantan con tal belleza,
con tal porte, con tal energía
y con tal espíritu ¡Qué
concierto tan fantástico!”.
Estas palabras resumen muy bien la gran
receptividad que tuvo la participación
de la Cantoría Alberto Grau y su
directora María Guinand.
Durante
la Convención Nacional en Oklahoma,
más de 3.000 directores de coros
escucharon sus conciertos y centenares
de ellos asistieron a los talleres de
la profesora Guinand. “Su interpretación
está llena de belleza, color, musicalidad
y brío”, éstas eran
las palabras de uno de los directores
de coros que asistió al concierto.
“[La Cantoría] es fantástica
y me emocionó mucho escucharlo
y deleitarme con la música que
obviamente aman hacer e interpretar”,
dice Diane Loomer, la directora del Chor
Leoni de Canadá, uno de los coros
internacionales invitados.
Al
público, quien respondió
con una ovación de pie para las
coralistas venezolanas, le encantó
particularmente Caracolitos Chicos y Los
dos gavilanes. Además, María
Guinand puso a bailar a los espectadores
con los ritmos del tambor de Nuestras
Navidades.
Además
de presentarse en conciertos, la Cantoría
Alberto Grau compartió experiencias
e impresiones con los otros coros participantes,
especialmente con los integrantes de los
coros internacionales invitados como la
Incheon City Chorale de Corea y Chor Leoni
de Canadá. También aprovecharon
la oferta de información sobre
coros, festivales, encuentros y cursos
de todo el mundo que había en la
Convención Nacional de Oklahoma.

The Cantoría
Alberto Grau Made Tour of Texas and Oklahoma
Even twenty years after winning several
awards at the Concorso Polifonico Internazionale
“Guido d'Arezzo”, the Cantoría
Alberto Grau has kept exporting the great
quality of Venezuelan choral singing at
international festivals and contests. Their
participation at the 2009 ACDA National
Convention at the beginning of March in
Oklahoma City was not the exception.
The
female choral ensemble made a stop in Texas
(Fort Worth, Denton, Copell) before arriving
in Oklahoma. They performed in several churches
of different denominations and universities,
showcasing their professionalism and vocal
excellence through a sacred repertoire that
included Mariam Matrem, Salve Regina, Laus
Trium Puerorum, and other contemporary religious
songs. The melodic voices of the Cantoría
brought a true spiritual experience to the
audience.
The
ACDA is one of the world’s most important
organizations for choral music that celebrated
its 50th anniversary at the 2009 National
Convention. The ACDA’s national president-elect
and director of the National Convention
said the Cantoría Alberto Grau sings
“so incredibly beautifully. The audience
was on its feet in a snap after the concert
because the women sing in such beauty, in
such poise, in such energy and in such spirit.
What a fantastic concert!”. These
worlds summarize the great receptiveness
to the participation of the Cantoría
and their conductor María Guinand.
During
the National Convention in Oklahoma City,
over 3,000 choir conductors went to their
concerts and hundreds of them attended the
workshops run by profesor Guinand. Their
interpretation was “so full of beauty,
color, musicality, and brio”, said
one of the conductors who attended the concert.
The Cantoría “is fantastic
and we’re so thrilled to hear them.
And laughing enjoying the music that they
obviously love to do and perform”,
said Diane Loomer, the conductor of Chor
Leoni (Canada), one of the international
guest choirs.
The
audience, who gave a standing ovation to
the Venezuelan choristers, particularly
loved Caracolitos Chicos and Los dos gavilanes.
Also, María Guinand made the audience
dance with the drum rhythms of Nuestras
Navidades.
Besides
performing, the Cantoría Alberto
Grau shared their experience and impressions
with other choirs, especially with the members
of the international guests such as the
Incheon City Chorale (Korea) and Chor Leoni
(Canada). They also took advantage of the
information available at the Nacional Convention
on choirs, festivals, meetings and courses
from all over the world.

Guinand dirige Coro
Nacional de España
La
maestra María Guinand fue invitada
a participar en el I Ciclo de Música
Coral en España. Este ciclo, que
se celebra entre el 2 de octubre 2008
al 17 de junio de 2009, es organizado
por la directora del Coro
Nacional de España, Mireia
Barrera, con el fin de acercar la música
coral al público y ofrecer intérpretes
de gran nivel y repertorios de calidad
pero poco interpretados. La primera edición
del Ciclo de música coral consta
de 6 conciertos, tres de ellos interpretados
por el Coro Nacional de España
y el resto por otros tres coros de prestigio
internacional como son The Tallis Scholars
(Reino Unido), Rias Kammerchor (Alemania)
y Accentus (Francia).
El
26 de marzo Guinand dirigió el
Coro Nacional de España en un concierto
que se denominó “Escrito
en América”, en el que se
interpretó un repertorio de música
compuesta sobre poemas españoles
y latinoamericanos (compositores como
Alberto Grau, Evencio Castellano y Antonio
Estévez y poetas como García
Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez
y Alberto Arvelo Torrealba). Esta presentación
se realizó en el Auditorio Nacional
de Música. El CNE demostró
gran entusiasmo y solvencia con el repertorio
Latinoamericano y el público les
proporcionó una ovación
de más de 10 minutos. En el prólogo
del Programa, brillantemente escrito por
la musicólogo Micaela Vergara expresa
que ‘este repertorio, es un legado,
que por desgracia, es más desconocido
de los que se merece: un patrimonio escrito
en América con vocación
de mensaje universal”
Además,
el concierto de cierre de este ciclo será
dirigido por Barrera cuyo repertorio,
interpretado por el Coro Nacional de España,
incluye obras de Villa-Lobos, Alberto
Grau, Josep Lluis Guzmán y una
obra por encargo para coro y percusión
de José Luis Greco.

María
Guinand Conducted the National Choir of
Spain
Maestro María Guinand was invited
to participate in the I Cycle of Choral
Music in Spain. This event, which takes
place between October 2, 2008 and June 17,
2009, is organized by the director of the
National
Choir of Spain, Mireia Barrera, as a
way to bring choral music to the audience
and to offer high quality repertoires but
seldom performed. The first edition of the
Cycle of Choral Music includes 6 concerts,
three of them performed by the National
Choir of Spain and the rest by renowned
international choirs: The Tallis Scholars
(United Kingdom), Rias Kammerchor (Germany)
and Accentus (France).
On
March 26, María conducted the Nacional
Choir of Spain in a concert named “Written
in America”. Its repertoire included
music composed over Iberoamerican poems
(by composers Alberto Grau, Evencio Castellano
and Antonio Estévez and poets Duch
as García Lorca, Juan Ramón
Jiménez and Alberto Arvelo Torrealba).
This concert took place at the Auditorio
Nacional de Música. The choir ensemble
showed a great enthusiasm and competence
with the Latin American repertoire and the
audience gave them a 10-minute ovation.
The prologue of the concert program, brilliantly
written by musicologist Micaela Vergara,
says “this repertoire, is a legacy
that is undeservedly unknown: a written
legacy in America with an universal message
as a vocation”.
In
addition, the final concert of the cycle
will be conducted by Barrera. The repertoire,
interpreted by the National Choir of Spain,
includes works by Villa-Lobos, Alberto Grau,
Josep Lluis Guzmán and a piece commissioned
for choir and percussion by José
Luis Greco.

La músico venezolana fue
la seleccionada por el jurado de este premio
que otorga por primera vez la Internationale
Bachakademie de Stuttgart
Gran
alegría reina en los espacios de
la Fundación Schola Cantorum de Venezuela,
pués su directora la profesora María
Guinand ha sido la seleccionada para recibir
el premio “Helmuth Rilling”
en su primera edición.
Un
jurado conformado por el destacado clavecinista
y musicólogo holandés Ton
Koopman director de la Orquesta y Coro Barrocos
de Amsterdam, el gran maestro de origen
hindú Zubin Mehta quien ha sido director
titular de orquestas como las Filarmónicas
de Nueva York, Israel y el Teatro del Maggio
Musicale Fiorentino, el famoso pianista
y director de orquesta Dennis Russell Davies,
el propio maestro Helmuth Rilling, director
artístico de la Academia Bach de
Stuttgart, el doctor Christian Lorenz, gerente
de la institución otorgante.
Este
premio tiene como objetivo hacer un homenaje
al maestro Rilling y mantener la conexión
del nombre del maestro fundador de la institución,
ante su eventual retiro de la actividad
al frente de las orquestas y coros de la
Fundación.
El
premio busca reconocer el trabajo realizado
de manera consecuente por personalidades
que dediquen su vida al desarrollo del arte
musical, bien sea en la dirección
artística, en la docencia o en la
educación de la audiencia.
Estas
características fueron reconocidas
de manera unánime en la directora
venezolana María Guinand lo que la
hace acreedora de este premio, que enorgullece
al Movimiento Musical Venezolano y de manera
particular al Movimiento Coral.
La
decisión del jurado reza de la siguiente
manera: “Usted combina varios de los
aspectos que han sido y siguen siendo cruciales
en el trabajo de Helmuth Rilling. Usted
ha consolidado su nombre en la comunidad
coral internacional. Usted representa un
continente joven y ha abierto muchos nuevos
horizontes en la música coral. Ha
construido una gran red de trabajo de inmensa
relevancia artística y ha mantenido
siempre sus vínculo con la Academia
Bach de Stuttgart”
La
entrega del premio será en la ciudad
de Stuttgart, el próximo 12 de septiembre.
El mismo consta de un reconocimiento escrito,
un reconocimiento en metálico y la
realización de un concierto de las
agrupaciones de la Academia Bach de Stuttgart
en homenaje a la directora venezolana.
Igualmente,
la Academia Bach de Stuttgart estudia la
posibilidad de invitar a la Schola Cantorum
de Venezuela para ofrecer conciertos en
el marco de la Stuttgarter Musikfest que
se realizará en septiembre de 2010. |

of the Helmuth Rilling Award
The
Venezuelan musician was chosen by the jury
of this award, the first to be granted by
the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart.
Great joy reigns over
the headquarters of the Schola Cantorum
of Venezuela Foundation, since its director,
professor María Guinand has been
chosen to receive the Helmuth Rilling Award
in its first edition.
The jury comprises
the renowned Dutch harpsichordist and musicologist,
Ton Koopman, who is the director of Amsterdam
Baroque Orchestra and Choir, the great Indian
maestro Zubin Mehta, who has been the titular
conductor of the Philharmonics of New York,
Israel and the Teatro del Maggio Musicale
Fiorentino, the well-known pianist and orchestra
conductor Dennis Russell Davies, maestro
Helmuth Rilling himself, artistic director
of the Bachakademie of Stuttgart, and Dr.
Christian Lorenz, manager of this institution.
This award is intended
to pay homage to maestro Rilling and to
keep the connection of the name of the institution’s
founder, given his eventual retirement from
the orchestras and choirs of the Foundation.
The award is also
intended to consistently give recognition
to those people who devote their lives to
the development of the musical art, whether
in artistic direction, in teaching or in
educating the audience.
These caracteristics
were found unanimously in the Venezuelan
conductor María Guinand, which makes
her the recipient of this award. The Venezuelan
Musical Movement and particularly the Choral
Movement are very proud of her.
The decision of the
jury was the following: “You combine
many aspects of what was and is crucial
for Helmuth’s own work. You have quite
a name in the international choral-community.
You represent a “young” continent
and you opened many new horizons in choral-music.
You have built up your own network and artistic
importance but have your roots also since
many years in the Internationale Bachakademie
Stuttgart.”
The award ceremony
will take place in Stuttgart, next September
12. It comprises a written award, a cash
prize and a concert with the Bach Academy
of Stuttgart’s ensembles in honor
of the Venezuelan conductor.
Likewise, the Bach
Academy of Stuttgart studies the possiblity
of inviting the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela
to perform in concerts within the framework
of the Stuttgarter Musikfest to be held
in September, 2010.

Las
voces de la Cantoría Alberto Grau
presentes en banda sonora de “TETRO”,
el más reciente film de Francis
Ford Coppola
La
Fundación Schola Cantorum se enorgullece
de la participación de la Cantoría
Alberto Grau en la banda sonora de Tetro,
el más reciente trabajo fílmico
del célebre realizador estadounidense
y cinco veces ganador del Oscar, Francis
Ford Coppola. El trabajo musical de esta
película estuvo a cargo del compositor
argentino radicado en Estados Unidos y
galardonado por el Grammy, Osvaldo Golijov.
Sobre
la escogencia de Golijov como el compositor
de la banda sonora para la película,
Coppola señala que lo que le gusta
de él es que “aunque es joven
-apenas está en sus cuarenta -
es un compositor clásico que es
muy creativo en la manera que él
enfoca la música”. Además,
“Osvaldo nació en Argentina
y está familiarizado con el tango
y los sonidos, ritmos y arreglos argentinos.
Cuando decidí ambientar el filme
en Argentina, sabía que Osvaldo
sería capaz de combinar sus conocimientos
sobre la música argentina y su
formación clásica, lo cual
es adecuado para la película ya
que uno de los personajes, Carlo Tetrocini,
es un famoso director de música
clásica”.
Golijov
ya ha trabajado en anteriores ocasiones
con nuestra fundación. Vale la
pena recordar que los estrenos mundiales
de dos de las obras de Golijov, Oceana
y La Pasión según San Marcos,
fueron realizados bajo la dirección
de María Guinand y con la interpretación
vocal de la Schola Cantorum de Venezuela,
la primera en el Oregon Bach Festival
de 1996 y la segunda en el European Music
Festival de Stuttgart en 2000. De ahí,
La Pasión según San Marcos
ha recorrido los auditorios más
prestigiosos del mundo contando siempre
con la participación de la Schola
Cantorum y con la dirección de
María Guinand en numerosas oportunidades.
Las voces de las integrantes de la Cantoría
Alberto Grau, fueron plasmadas en algunas
de las piezas de la banda sonora junto
con la reconocida soprano estadounidense
Dawn Upshaw.
Con

que “hay una confluencia de música
sinfónica y operística con
música alegre de estilo popular
y contemporánea”.

Present on the Music Film Score of “TETRO”,

Latest Film
The
Schola Cantorum of Venezuela Foundation
is proud of the participation of the Cantoría
Alberto Grau on the film score of Tetro,
the most recent film by the renowned American
director and five-time Oscar winner, Francis
Ford Coppola. US-based Argentine composer
and Grammy Award winner, Osvaldo Golijov
was in charge of the musical work of this
film.
Osvaldo has previously worked with
our Foundation. It’s worth remembering
that the world premieres of two of his works,
Oceana and La Pasión según
San Marcos, were held under the conducting
of María Guinand y with the voice
performance of the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela,
the former at the Oregon Bach Festival in
1996 and the latter at the European Music
Festival of Sttutgart in 2000. From then
on, La Pasión según San Marcos
has been performed in the most prestigious
auditoria of the world, always with the
participation of the Schola Cantorum and
a number of times under the baton of María.
Regarding
the selection of Osvaldo as the composer
of the music score, Francis says that what
he likes about Osvaldo is that “even
though he’s not very old –he’s
only in his forties- he’s a classically-trained
symphony composer who is very creative with
the way he approaches music”. Also,
“Osvaldo was born in Argentina and
is familiar with the tango and all the Argentine
sounds, rhythms and orchestrations. When
I decided to set the film in Argentina,
I knew that Osvaldo would be able to combine
his knowledge of Argentine music and his
classical background, which is appropriate
in this movie since Carlo Tetrocini is a
famous conductor of classical music.”
The
voices of the choristers of the Cantoría
Alberto Grau were recorded for some of the
tracks of Tetro’s film score along
with the renowned American soprano singer
Dawn Upshaw
On
the film score, Osvaldo says “there’s
a confluence of symphonic and operatic music
but also lively popular and contemporary

Concierto
a beneficio del programa Construir Cantando
en Toronto
Este año, la Asociación
de Estudiantes de la Facultad de Música
de la Universidad de Toronto, Canadá,
organizó un concierto a beneficio
del Programa Construir Cantando de la Fundación
Schola Cantorum de Venezuela. En noviembre
del año pasado, María Guinand
y Alberto Grau visitaron la universidad
y su dedicación a las obras sociales
a través de la música inspiró
a los estudiantes de esa casa de estudios.
Como Guinand y Grau los apoyaron con su
talento, los estudiantes quisieron devolverles
ese favor. Así, en la noche del 6
de enero de 2009, estudiantes de música
se unieron para interpretar música
de todos los estilos que incluyó
pop, rock, jazz y clásico. Este esfuerzo
es de gran ayuda para que la Fundación
influya positivamente en las vidas de los
niños en Venezuela.

This
year the Faculty of Music Undergraduate
Student Association at the University of
Toronto, Canada, organized a benefit concert
in support of the Construir Cantando project
of the Fundacion Schola Cantorum. In November
2008, Maria Guinand and Alberto Grau visited
the university and inspired students with
their dedication to social action through
music. After supporting tha faculty with
their talents, the students wanted to support
them in turn. On the evening of January
6, 2009, music students joined together
to perform an evening of music of all styles,
including popular, rock, jazz, and classical.
This effort will help the Fundacion make
a difference in the lives of the children
of Venezuela.

“En
torno a la Semana Mayor”
Festival de Música Sacra en las Iglesias
del Municipio Sucre
De
manera conjunta la Dirección de Cultura
del Municipio Sucre, la Academia Nacional
de Canto Gregoriano y la Fundación
Schola Cantorum de Venezuela presentaron
la 18º edición del Festival
de Música Sacra “En torno al
drama de la cruz”, el cual se llevó
a cabo en las iglesias del Municipio Sucre.
Participaron
en el Festival: Niños Cantores de
Los Teques, Schola Juvenil de Venezuela,
Orfeón Universitario Simón
Bolívar, Coral Mercantil, Sine Nomine
Voces Oscuras, Cantoría Alberto Grau
y Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, agrupaciones
que fueron recibidas en las Iglesias de
Lomas del Ávila, Barrio Unión,
Centro Histórico de Petare, Boleíta,
La California Norte y El Marques.
Este
festival que se organiza desde 1992 tiene
como objetivo fundamental, retornar la interpretación
de la Música Sacra a su espacio ideal,
el templo. Desde el Canto Gregoriano hasta
piezas contemporáneas dedicadas a
la oración y la alabanza son interpretadas
durante el servicio religioso y en pequeños
recitales que se brinda a las comunidades
dando a las celebraciones religiosas de
la Cuaresma un mayor ambiente de paz y recogimiento.
El Festival concluyó el domingo de
Ramos con una gran Misa en la redoma de
Petare, para la cual se sumaron coralistas
de distintas agrupaciones de la capital
en la interpretación de un canto
común.

Sacred Music Festival at the Churches
of the Municipality of Sucre (Caracas)
The
Office of Culture of the Municipality of
Sucre, the National Academy of Gregorian
Chant and the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela
Foundation presented the 18th Edition of
the Sacred Music Festival “On the
Drama of the Cross”, which was held
at the churches of the Municipality of Sucre.
Niños
Cantores de Los Teques, Youth Schola Choir
of Venezuela, Orfeón Universitario
Simón Bolívar, Coral Mercantil,
Sine Nomine Voces Oscuras, Cantoría
Alberto Grau and Schola Cantorum of Venezuela
participated at the Festival. The churches
of Lomas del Ávila, Barrio Unión,
Centro Histórico de Petare, Boleíta,
La California Norte and El Marques hosted
these concerts.
This
Festival, held since 1992, is aimed at returning
the performance of Sacred Music to its ideal
setting: the temple. From Gregorian Chant
to contemporary pieces devoted to prayers
are sung during masse and in small recitals.
They bring an ambiance of peace and meditation
to the religious celebrations of Lent. This
festival ended on Palm Sunday with a great
Masse at the redoma de Petare, in which
choristers from different ensembles of Caracas
performed a commong singing.

presencia venezolana en el Coro Mundial
Juvenil 2009
Hace
algunos meses anunciamos que Ana María
Raga, directora asociada de la Schola Cantorum
de Venezuela y la Schola Juvenil de Venezuela,
había sido seleccionada para dirigir
el Coro Mundial de Jóvenes en su
sesión de Verano 2009. Pues ahora
estamos más contentos de informar
que siete cantores venezolanos han asegurado
su puesto en esta edición. Los nombres
de Vania Romero, María Gabriela Martínez,
Rodrigo Sosa, Jonás Yajure y Juan
Pablo Guirigay se suman a los de Paúl
Sojo y Juan Gorrín quienes ya estuvieron
en la edición 2008, haciendo un grupo
de siete cantores. Es, sin duda, la delegación
de cantores venezolanos más grandes
que haya habido en alguna sesión
del Coro Mundial. Venidos de Caracas, Mérida,
Lara, Guárico y Miranda se unirán
en esta aventura musical que los llevará
entre el 8 de Julio y el 1 de agosto a distintas
ciudades de Bélgica, Francia, Alemania
y Holanda. Esta numerosa selección
es una clara muestra del desarrollo coral
y vocal de nuestro país. Felicitaciones

Great
Venezuelan Presence at the 2009 World
Youth Choir
We
announced months ago that professor Ana
María Raga, Associate Conductor of
the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela and the
Youth Schola Choir of Venezuela, had been
chosen to conduct the World Youth Choir
Summer Session 2009. now we are proud to
inform that seven Venezuelan singers have
assured their place in this edition. Vania
Romero, María Gabriela Martínez,
Rodrigo Sosa, Jonás Yajure and Juan
Pablo Guirigay join Paúl Sojo and
Juan Gorrín, who have already participated
in the 2008 edition, making up a group of
seven singers. It is undoubtedly the biggest
Venezuelan delegation to ever be present
in any World Youth Choir session. Coming
from Caracas, Mérida, Lara, Guárico
y Miranda, they will get into this musical
adventure that will take them from July
8 to August 1 to different cities of Belgium,
France, Germany and the Nethelands. This
numerous delegation shows the development
of our choral movement. Congratulations
to these seven singers and we invite our
young singers to audition for the next editions.

ciclo de Conciertos Comentados
de los coros
de la Fundación Schola Cantorum
Como
parte de las líneas de acción
de la Fundación Schola Cantorum en
el año 2009, hemos iniciado una serie
de conciertos comentados, con los cuales
se pretende, además de brindar espacios
de entretenimiento y buena música,
ofrecer al público participante una
experiencia enriquecedora que sirva para
acercar al público caraqueño
a la música coral, sus compositores,
los estilos musicales y los secretos escondidos
detrás de cada partitura.
Este
ciclo de Conciertos comenzó el pasado
mes de enero con un concierto comentado
sobre música de compositores latinoamericanos
que se realizó en el Centro de Arte
La Estancia.
El
próximo concierto comentado será
el 26 de abril a las 5:00 pm en el Auditorio
de la Asociación Cultural Humboldt
y su repertorio incluirá “Madrigales
y composiciones corales sobre poemas iberoamericanos”.
En estos programas la Schola Cantorum de
Venezuela y la Cantoría Alberto Grau
presentarán los programas que han
llevado a sus más recientes giras
internacionales. Un concierto se llevó
a cabo al 19 de abril, también en
la ACH e incluyó un repertorio titulado
“Al abrigo del espíritu”,
compuesto por piezas de Alberto Ginastera,
Calixto Álvarez, Alberto Grau, Beatriz
Bilbao, Ernani Aguiar, Maurice Duruflé
y otros.

Great
Cycle of Commented
Concerts of the Choirs of the Schola Cantorum
of Venezuela Foundation
As
part of this year’s lines of action
of the Foundation, we have started a series
of commented concerts in order to offer
an enriching experience that brings together
the audience of Caracas, choral music, the
composer, the musical styles and the secrets
behind each and every score, besides bringing
entertainment and good music.
This
concert cycle started last January with
a commented concert on music by Latin American
composers at La Estancia Arts Center.
The
next commented concert will be held on 26,
at 5 pm at the Auditorium of the Humboldt
Cultural Association and the repertoire
will include “Madrigals and choral
pieces based on Latin American poetry”
The Schola Cantorum of Venezuela and the
Cantoría Alberto Grau will introduce
the repertoires of their latest international
tours. A concert took place on April 19,
also at the HCA, and included a repertoire
entitled “Al abrigo del espíritu”
comprised of pieces by Alberto Ginastera,
Calixto Álvarez, Alberto Grau, Beatriz
Bilbao, Ernani Aguiar, Maurice Duruflé,
etc.

el montaje de la monumental Misa de Réquiem
de Giuseppe Verdi, se unirán nuevamente
las fuerzas musicales de la Orquesta Sinfónica
Simón Bolívar, la Schola Cantorum
de Venezuela, Cantoría Alberto Grau,
Orfeón Universitario Simón
Bolívar y el Coro Sinfónico
Nacional Juvenil, todos bajo la conducción
del prestigioso maestro alemán Helmuth
Rilling, quien se ha convertido en un gran
amigo de nuestro Movimiento Orquestal y
Coral desde el año 1993, y siempre
que nos visita, además de realizar
el montaje de hermosas obras del repertorio
universal, dicta un gran Taller de Dirección,
para jóvenes directores y estudiantes
de Dirección Coral.
Los participantes del Taller tienen la oportunidad
de dirigir trozos de la obra en los conciertos
comentados con los cuales el maestro ofrece
al público asistente la explicación
de la obra para acercarles al genio del
compositor italiano. Por otra parte, los
solistas invitados para el montaje dictarán
durante la semana un Taller para Cantantes,
trabajando los trozos solistas de la obra
así como lieder alemán. Los

Verdi’s
Requiem to be Played
in Caracas under the Conducting of Maestro
Helmuth Rilling
The
Bach Academy of Venezuela, FESNOJIV and
the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela Foundation
join forces for this ambitious project.
For
the performance of the monumental Giuseppe
Verdi’s Messa da Réquiem, the
Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Schola
Cantorum of Venezuela, Cantoría Alberto
Grau, Orfeón Universitario Simón
Bolívar and the Nacional Youth Symphony
Choir will join their musical forces once
again, all under the baton of renowned German
maestro Helmuth Rilling, who has become
a great friend of our Orchestral and Choral
Movement since 1993, and he always visits
us. Besides conducting beautiful pieces
of the universal repertoire, he will run
a workshop on Conducting for young conductors
and Choral Conducting students.
The participants will have the chance to
conduct excerpts of the piece in the commented
concerts in which the maestro will offer
an explanation of this piece in order to
bring the audience the genius of the Italian
composer. On the other hand, the guest soloists
will run during the week a Singing Workshop,
working on the solo parts of the piece and
also on the German lieder. Those who are

The
workshops will take place from May 01 to
08, a Commented Concert on the 08 and the
Great Concert on Saturday, 09.

la invitación para regresar al mismo
Festival para presentar el estreno neoyorquino
de la ópera de John Adams A Flowering
Tree y un concierto a capella.
A
Flowering Tree ópera en cuyo
libreto John Adams comparte honores con
su compatriota Peter Sellars será
presentada por primera vez en la Ciudad
que Nunca Duerme los días 13, 14
y 16 de agosto. Las presentaciones serán
en el Rose Theater del prestigioso Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts en el marco
de las celebraciones del 50mo aniversario
de este célebre complejo de edificios
y al mismo tiempo del mundialmente famoso
festival Mostly Mozart 2009. Esta obra será
dirigida por el propio compositor John Adams
y con la puesta en escena de su colaborador
habitual, el reconocido Peter Sellars, la
interpretación vocal estará
a cargo de nuestra Schola Cantorum de Venezuela
junto al mismo elenco de solistas que compartió
con nuestra agrupación el estreno
mundial de la obra en Viena en 2006 y el
estreno londinense en 2007. La responsabilidad
en la parte instrumental estará en
manos de la Orquesta de St. Luke’s.
A
Flowering Tree fue una obra comisionada
por el New Crowned Hope Festival de Viena,
el Barbican Center de Londres, The San Francisco
Symphony, la Filarmónica de Berlín
y el Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
de Nueva York. Su estreno mundial se llevó
a cabo en 2006 en el marco del New Crowned
Hope Festival en Viena, Austria, y a partir
de ahí, ha sido presentado en Berlín,
Londres y San Francisco. Su compositor,
John Adams, artista residente del año
2009 de Mostly Mozart, ha creado reconocidas
obras sinfónicas y operísticas
como Nixon en China, El Niño, y Doctor
Atomic y ha recibido numerosos galardones,
entre ellos el premio Pulitzer (2003). En
2007 se realizó la grabación
de esta obra bajo el sello Nonesuch con
la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres
y la Schola Cantorum de Venezuela y bajo
la dirección del mismo Adams.
Esta
ópera en dos actos está basada
en una leyenda del sur de India y está
inspirada en La Flauta Mágica de
Mozart. La obra cuenta la historia de Khumuda
quien posee la mágica habilidad de
transformarse en un árbol que florece
y así ayudar a su familia. La joven
sufre una serie de transformaciones y desventuras
a lo largo de la obra para finalmente encontrar
el verdadero amor en el Príncipe.
En pocas palabras, es una historia que celebra
el poder del amor.
La
soprano Jessica Rivera asumirá el
papel de Khumuda, el tenor Russell Thomas
como el Príncipe y el barítono
Eric Owens como el Narrador. También
contará con la participación
de los bailarines javaneses Rusini Sidi,
Eko Supriyanto y Astri Kusama Wardani.
También
como parte de su participación en
el Festival Mostly Mozart, la Schola Cantorum
de Venezuela ofrecerá un concierto
el 15 del mismo mes en la recién
remozada Alice Tully Hall, del mismo Lincoln
Center con un repertorio de piezas corales
seculares y música tradicional de
compositores contemporáneos de las
Américas. Este programa titulado
Tradiciones, Colores y Ritmos. Música
Coral Contemporánea de las Américas
incluirá piezas de destacados compositores
de todo el continente, con especial énfasis
en la música de compositores norteamericanos
y venezolanos. Obras de Grau, Sojo, Ruiz
y Castellanos se dejarán oír
junto a otras de Murray Schaffer, Eric Whitacre
o el centenario Elliot Carter. En su participación
en 2007, la Schola presentó igualmente
dos programas, el primero incluía
el oratorio La Pasión según
San Marcos de O. Golijov y el segundo
programa conformado por una primera parte
de música sacra a capella y la segunda
parte el Réquiem de W.A.

La
edición 2009 del Festival se llevará

The Schola Cantorum to Make Triumphant Return
to the Lincoln Center
of New York
After
the succesful participation of the Schola
Cantorum in the 2007 edition of Mostly
Mozart Festival, there is an open invitation
to return to such Festival to perform the
New York premiere of John Adams’s
opera A Flowering Tree and an a cappella
concert.
A
Flowering Tree opera, whose libretto is
written by Adams and fellow American Peter
Sellars, will be performed for the first
time in the City That Never Sleeps on August
13, 14 and 16. The concerts will be held
at the Rose Theater of the prestigious Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts within the
framework of the 50th anniversary celebrations
of this famous building complex and at the
same time on the ocassion of the renowned
2009 Mostly Mozart Festival. This piece
will be conducted by the composer himself
and with the mise-en-scène of his
usual collaborator, Peter Sellars. The Schola
Cantorum of Venezuela is in charge of the
voice performance along with the same soloists
who sang in the world premiere in Vienna,
in 2006, and in the London premiere in 2007.
The instrumental part is under the responsibility
of St Luke’s Orchestra.
A
Flowering Tree is a commissioned work for
the New Crowned Hope Festival of Vienna,
the Barbican Center of Lonfon, The San Francisco
Symphony, and the Lincoln Center for the
Performing Arts. Its world premiere took
place in 2006 within the framework of the
New Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna, Austria,
and from then on, it has been performed
in Berlin, London and San Francisco. John
Adams, Mostly Mozart’s 2009 resident
artist, has composed acclaimed symphony
and opera pieces such as Nixon in China,
El Niño and Doctor Atomic and has
received many prestigious awards, such as
the Pulitzer (2003). In 2007, he recorded
this opera under Nonesuch label with the
London Symphony Orchestra and the Schola
Cantorum of Venezuela and under the conducting
of Adams himself.
This
opera in two acts is based on a legend from
Southern India and is inpired in Mozart’s
The Magic Flute. The piece recounts the
story of Khumuda who has the magical ability
to transform herlself into a flowering tree
in order to help her family. The young woman
goes through a series of trasformations
and misadventures throughout the piece and
finally finds true love in the Prince. It
is a story about the power of love.
Soprano
singer Jessica Rivera will take on the role
of Khumuda, tenor Russel Thomas as the Prince
and baritone Eric Owens as the Storyteller.
Javanese dancers Rusini Sidi, Eko Supriyanto
and Astri Kusama Wardani will also participate
in this performance.
As
part of their participation at the Mostly
Mozart Festival, the Schola Cantorum will
give a concert on the 15 at the recently
revamped Alice Tully Hall, of the Lincoln
Center, with a repertoire of secular choral
pieces and traditional music by contemporary
composers of the Americas. This program,
entitled “Traditions, Colors and Rhythms.
Contemporary Choral Music of the Americas”,
will include pieces by renowned composers
from the whole continent, particularly American
and Venezuelan composers. Pieces by Grau,
Sojo, Ruiz and Castellanos, Murray Schaffer,
Eric Whitacre or Elliot Carter will be performed.
In 2007, the Schola Cantorum also featured
two programs, the first one included the
Golijov’s oratorio La Pasión
según San Marcos and the second one
was made up of a cappella sacred music and
the second part of Mozart’s Requiem,
under the baton of maestro Luis Langrée
and with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra.
The 2009 edition will take place between
July 28 and August 22. It is a series of
summer concerts to be held at the different
buildings of the Lincoln Center in order
to pay homage to the life and work of Austrian
composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through
the presentation of his works and pieces
inspired in the compositions of this Austrian
composer.

500 Sharing the Voices
From
July 5 to 12, the Festival 500 Sharing the
Voices will take place in St. John’s,
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is
a biannual event that gathers together choir
ensembles, conductors and choral music specialists
from all over the world. The guest choirs
have the opportunity to participate in concerts,
workshops, clinics and master classes with
the world’s greatest maestros of choral
music. In addition, those who don’t
belong to any ensemble are also welcomed
to sing at the Festival and even to participate
in a great concert gala. A special appeal
of this festival is the wonderful natural
scenery where it takes place: St. John’s,
“The city of legends”, is the
most easterly city North America.

Edición del CORAL DE LA PAMPA
La
Asociación Pro Canto Coral de General
Acha y el Coro Ayuntun de Santa Rosa anuncian
la Séptima Edición del CORAL
DE LA PAMPA (Argentina), a realizarse en
el mes de septiembre en distintas localidades
del territorio provincial.
Las
entidades organizadoras son Instituciones
de Bien Público que han sido creadas
por cantantes de coros con el objeto de
promover y difundir la actividad coral,
además de asumir la misión
de asistir técnicamente y capacitar
a los directores en actividad.
Dentro
de este marco nace en el año 2003
nuestro encuentro, que reviste carácter
no competitivo, ideado como herramienta
de intercambio y comunicación con
agrupaciones corales de todo el país
y del exterior.
De esta manera, realizaremos conciertos
corales en distintas localidades durante
todo el mes de septiembre, culminando nuestro
evento el fin de semana del 25 y 26 con
conciertos en Santa Rosa y General Acha.
Para esta fecha invitamos especialmente
a coros hermanos de toda la Argentina y
del exterior a sumarse a nuestra propuesta.
Para las agrupaciones de otros países
que nos visiten hemos previsto mayor cantidad
de conciertos, por lo que la invitación
se extiende desde el 22 al 26 de septiembre.

Seventh
Edition of CORAL DE LA PAMPA
The
Asociación Pro Canto Coral de General
Acha and the Ayuntun Choir of Santa Rosa
announce the Seventh Edition of CORAL DE
LA PAMPA (Argentina), to be held during
September in different cities of the the
province.
The
organizers are Public Wealth Institutions
that have been created for choristers in
order to promote and disseminate choral
activity and to assume the mission of technically
assisting and training conductors.
This
meeting starts in 2003 within this framework,
which is a non-competitive event and has
been created as an exchange tool and communication
with choral ensembles from the country and
abroad.
Therefore,
choral concerts will be held in different
cities in September, finishing on the 25
and 26 with performances in Santa Rosa and
General Acha. For this date, the choirs
from all Argentine and abroad are invited.
For foreign choir ensembles, more concert
dates have been scheduled, so this invitation
is from September 22 to 26.
Likewise,
Italian choirs are invited to join the Santa
